Then I ran a chkdsk /f and it says everything is ok. But when I tried to run a copy command on it (because I'd want a backup of it, right?), windows says it can't copy the file because it's corrupted. I thought of replacing the corrupted pdc.sys file. Now, it's back to the previous state of booting to the recovery partition. UPDATE: I got an USB stick to boot, and I've restored the BCD file to the original. Oh! The computer is a Dell XPS 8700, in case it matters. But I would prefer to avoid having to reinstall everything. I have backup of important data, so I assume I could do a system restore (that would fix it, right?) after restoring the BCD file. Hopefully, I can boot from USB, if I can create a bootable USB stick.Īssuming the problem is a corrupted pdc.sys. Looks like I've also lost the option to boot from CD/DVD.

I've tried to boot from an old windows install CD (WinXP is the only one I could find, but I figured I only needed a prompt to restore the BCD file), but no luck. On the other hand, I've lost access to the troubleshooting screen and to the cmd prompt. The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.īeing optimistic, I may have found the error, which was being hidden by the auto repair thing, before.

Now, when trying to start up it shows a screen with something like You PC couldn't start properly After rebuilding the BCD file, which was strangely half the size of the original or less, boot behavior has changed. Now, I'm not sure this was a step forward or a step backward. I tried to fix the boot by following instructions from this dell article. When starting up, it'd run an automatic repair, fail to repair, and boot to a trobleshooting screen, from where I could try a system restore (failed) and I had access to a cmd prompt. Eventually, I was forced to reboot it the hard way (through the power button).Īfter that, it wouldn't boot anymore. I just wanted to charge it, but it apparently tried to install something. And I thank you in advance for any insight you can provide. I'll try to explain with as much as information as I can. I've run into a big inconvenience with my PC.
